PELLA, Iowa -- Records were broken in the 2014-15 season debut of the Nebraska Wesleyan men's basketball team on Saturday night as Central College defeated the Prairie Wolves, 132-118, in Pella, Iowa.
The 132 points by Central were a new school record for points in game for the Dutch, while the 132 points allowed were the most ever for a Nebraska Wesleyan team breaking the previous record of 124 points scored by Doane in 1977.
In his first game as head coach,
Dale Wellman didn't disappoint his promise of an up-tempo game as the Prairie Wolves eclipsed 100 points and had their highest point total since the 2003-04 season. However, a late 2nd half run spoiled the Prairie Wolves chances of giving Wellman a win in his debut.
NWU trailed Central by two points, 62-60, at halftime as the Prairie Wolves overcame an early 11-point first half deficit. With the game tied at 96-96 with over six minutes remaining, Central went on a quick 7-0 run and never allowed the Prairie Wolves to get back within five points. The Dutch then posted a 17-8 run to go up double digits and seal the victory.
The big difference of the game came at the free throw line where Central outscored the Prairie Wolves by 22 points. Central was 41-54 at the free throw line, compared to NWU hitting 19-26. In all, NWU committed 35 fouls, 16 more than their opponent.
A total of 13 players saw action in the season opener for the Prairie Wolves with 11 different players getting in the scoring column. Seven players reached double figures led by
Trey Bardsley with 18 points.Â
Travis Giesselmann and
Byron Thompson each had 17 points. NWU had 102 shot attempts, with 48 from beyond the arc as the Prairie Wolves were 11-48 from 3-point range. Central also outrebounded NWU by 15 (55-40).
Three players for Central scored over 20 points led by Aaron Rosenstiel with 26 points and 11 rebounds. The Dutch shot 60.6 percent from the floor and hit 11 3-pointers.
