Crete, Neb. -- Doane College ended Nebraska Wesleyan's five match winning streak as the Tigers swept past the Prairie Wolves 3-0 in GPAC volleyball at the Haddix Center in Crete, Neb., on Wednesday night.
NWU falls below .500 in GPAC play with a 3-4 record as the 15th-ranked Prairie Wolves are now 15-4 overall. Doane is now 11-12 overall and 4-4 in GPAC play.
The Prairie Wolves jumped ahead 10-6 early in the match as
Malory Dahl got a kill to put NWU up by four. From there, Doane scored seven unanswered points to take a 12-10 lead on four NWU errors. With the first set tied at 23-23, Shelbi Mlynczak got a kill for Doane then NWU had an attack error giving the Tigers the first set victory.
Doane also got off to an early lead in the second set with a 16-10 lead. NWU ran off eight straight points with
Makayla Westphal serving to go ahead by two points. NWU maintained the lead up to 20-19, but Doane scored six of the next eight points to win the set 25-22.
The 15th-ranked Prairie Wolves came out of the locker room in the third set poised to get back on track. NWU led 12-6 early and kept the lead up to 19-17. Doane got a service ace and two straight kills to take a 20-19 lead and NWU never would lead again. The Tigers had four straight match points but the Prairie Wolves kept fighting back to 24-23, but Doane got a kill to seal the win.
Doane had 42 total kills, compared to 38 for NWU. The Prairie Wolves were hurt with 16 attack errors, seven service errors and five reception errors.
Malory Dahl led the Prairie Wolves with 11 kills with only one error.
Mackenzie Ashton had 21 digs, with
Kennedy Hegert adding 13 digs.
