LINCOLN, Neb. -- It took five sets and went extended in the fifth set, but Nebraska Wesleyan eventually came out on top as the Prairie Wolves defeated Hastings College 3-2 in GPAC volleyball action on homecoming Saturday at Snyder Arena.
The Prairie Wolves won set one, 25-21, but the Broncos took the next two sets 23-25, 21-25. NWU dominated the fourth set 25-13 to force a deciding fifth set. In the fifth set, the Prairie Wolves came out on top 16-14.
NWU trailed 3-0 in the deciding fifth set as the Broncos had back-to-back blocks and a kill to jump ahead early. They led by as much as 5-1 before NWU made a run. The Prairie Wolves took over the lead at 8-7 and went up 10-7 on an ace from
Kelsey Bahe. Hastings then clawed their way back to tie the match at 11-11, 13-13 and 14-14. Alysaa Stanek pounded down a kill to put the Prairie Wolves up 15-14 to give them the second match point. An overpass from Hastings allowed Stanek to send the game-winner home with authority for the thrilling victory.
Stanek had a big match for the Prairie Wolves posting a double-double of 18 kills and 12 blocks for a match high in both categories.Â
Katelyn Walsh provided 14 kills, while
Malory Dahl chipped in 10.Â
Alexa Rosenau had a double-double of 35 assists and 12 digs, while
Kelsey Bahe also had a double-double of 21 assists and 13 digs.
Nebraska Wesleyan hit .174 as a team, compared to .102 for Hastings. The Broncos were held to -.089 in the fourth set to hurt their overall average. Katie Zoucha led Hastings with 15 kills.
