LINCOLN, Neb. -- Nebraska Wesleyan got back to .500 in Great Plains Athletic Conference play as the Prairie Wolves swept past Morningisde College, 3-0, on Friday night (Oct. 17) at Snyder Arena in Lincoln.
NWU won in scores of 25-13, 25-20, 25-15 to improve to 17-5 overall and 5-5 in GPAC play, while Morningside falls to 15-11, 2-8.
The 14th-ranked Prairie Wolves played a complete game to take down the Mustangs, but did have to come back in the first two sets.
NWU trailed 7-5 early in the first set but then went on a scoring run to outscore the Mustangs 12-3 to take a 17-10 advantage. From there, the Prairie Wolves rolled as they pounded out 13 kills in the first set and held Morningside to just a .027 percentage.
In set two, the set was tied eight different times but had just one lead change. Morningside led most of the way early until a block from
Alyssa Stanek and
Alexa Rosenau gave NWU the 16-15 lead and they would never trail again. The Prairie Wolves had 17 kills in the second set and won the set on a kill by
Katelyn Walsh.
NWU wasted little time in the third set as they jumped out to a 10-5 advantage and cruised the rest of the way. Morningside had a negative hitting percentage as the Prairie Wolves took control at the net and added 13 kills.
Alyssa Stanek led the way for Nebraska Wesleyan with 14 kills and three blocks.
Alexa Rosenau handed out 21 assists with five digs while
Mackenzie Ashton had a match-high 17 digs.
Morningside was led by Kecia Verburg with seven kills.
NWU will be right back in action on Saturday as they make a trip to Mitchell, S.D., to face Dakota Wesleyan University.
