NWU-Doane Top 10 Games - No. 3

This week, to celebrate the Nebraska Wesleyan-Doane 100th football game in the long-standing rivalry, the schools athletic websites will feature the Top 10 games between the two programs.  Each school selected five that stood out among the first 99 games played.  One game for each school will be released each day this week with the top game being released on Friday.

On Saturday in Crete, the two teams will hook-up for the 100th time with Doane holding the smallest of leads in the all-time series, 47-46-6.  Kickoff between the Prairie Wolves and Tigers is set for 1 pm at Al Papik Field.

Nebraska Wesleyan – No. 3 (2013, NWU 20-19)

Playing under the lights on a Saturday night at Abel Stadium, Nebraska Wesleyan would try to hand Doane their first GPAC loss of the season as the Tigers were ranked No. 13 in the NAIA rankings.   NWU led 7-3 at halftime in a game that saw both defenses hold the opponents under 125 yards of total offense.  The 3rd quarter was controlled by Doane as they held the Prairie Wolves to only 14 yards, intercepted two passes and blocked a punt for a touchdown.  Trailing by 19-7 heading into the 4th quarter, Tyler Francis got the rally started with a TD pass to Carlin Krienert with 12:22 remaining.  On the Prairie Wolves final possession, Francis rolled right and found Connor Zumpfe in the corner of the end zone as he got one foot inbounds for the touchdown to put NWU ahead 20-19 with 1:23 remaining.  Doane had one final gasp, but Eric Richards intercepted a pass to seal the win that saw the NWU student body storm the field after the game.

Doane – No. 3 (2002, Doane 20-16)

Nebraska Wesleyan entered the game ranked No. 19 and 4-1 on the year while Doane was unranked and 4-2.  NWU led 13-0 at halftime as the Prairie Wolf defense held the Tigers in check, forcing two punts, a stop on downs, a fumble and a missed field goal.  Doane scored quickly to open the second half behind two passes that accounted for 68 yards.  Jeff Luebbe scored from one-yard out to make the score 13-7.  The Tigers opened the 4th quarter in the NWU red zone and a pass interference call on third and goal gave the Tigers new life.  They took advantage and punched the ball in from one-yard out as Jawaan Dodson scored to tie the game but the extra point attempt was missed.  The two squads exchanged punts before NWU retook the lead on a 44-yard Palmer field goal, his third of the game.  Doane was forced to punt and NWU brought the ball to midfield on their drive before Bill Cox forced a fumble that was recovered by Doane.  The Tigers marched down to the NWU one-yard for first and goal but was denied twice on quarterback keepers.  On third down, Luebbe found pay dirt for a 20-16 lead with 1:47 remaining.  Doane then attempted a squib-kick that bounced off a NWU player with the Tigers recovering and were able to run off some clock before punting.  Defensive lineman Brandon Bonk picked up an interception to end the game for a four-point win for the Tigers.
