Trey Bardsley had a good look at a 3-point attempt with 0:01 remaining but the shot bounced off the back iron as Northwestern College came into Snyder Arena and defeated the Prairie Wolves 78-76 in GPAC men's basketball action.
Bardsley had a baseline jump shot go in-and-out with 21 seconds remaining with NWU down one point. On the other end, Joey Habtemariam went 1-2 at the free throw line missing his second attempt giving NWU the ball with 16 seconds remaining down 78-76. The Prairie Wolves penetrated and kicked out to an open Bardley but the shot just wouldn't fall.
Northwestern picks up its second straight GPAC win and has now won 14 of the last 15 games over NWU since 2000. NWU drops its second consecutive home game to fall to 5-2, 1-2 in GPAC play.
In a game that changed leads 13 times, Northwestern's largest advantage was four points early in the second half. NWU led by as many as 10 points in the first half, then led 41-39 at the break as
Andrew Mitteis hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
The largest margin in the second half was six points with 15:49 to play as
Trevor Johnson put NWU ahead 51-45. Each team would exchange leads the rest of the way.
With under 2:00 remaining, Bardsley hit his second consecutive basket to put the Prairie Wolves up 76-72. On the next possession, Joey Habtemariam knocked down a 3-pointer for the Red Raiders to pull within one point at the 1:29 mark. NWU couldn't score on their next trip up the floor giving Northwestern the chance to take the lead.
Leading scorer Zack Leeper hit a layup in the paint with 0:33 remaining for the eventual game-winner as the Prairie Wolves were held scoreless the final two minutes.
The loss overshadows an outstanding performance by Nebraska Wesleyan senior
Trevor Johnson. Johnson poured in a career-high 30 points going 12-14 from the field as Northwestern had no answer for his moves in the lane. Johnson also had seven rebounds and three steals.
Eric Jackson scored 12 points and Andrew Mitties added 11 off the bench, all in the first half.
NWU's bugaboo was once again at the free throw line as they shot 55.6 percent going 10-18 from the charity stripe. The Prairie Wolves shot 2-14 from 3-point range.
Northwestern was led by Leeper with 25 points and Habtemariam scored 18.
Nebraska Wesleyan will look to rebound on Wednesday (Dec. 11) in their first true road game of the year at Concordia University.
