Prairie Wolves Open Season With 80-64 VIctory

All five starters scored in double figures as the Nebraska Wesleyan University men's basketball season opened the 2013-14 season with an 80-64 victory over Grace University on Friday night (Nov. 15) at Snyder Arena in Lincoln.
 
NWU built up a 41-20 lead at halftime then held on in the second half, despite Grace (1-7) scoring 44 second half points.
 
Senior forward Trent Scheitel scored a career-high 18 points with eight rebounds and five assists to lead the Prairie Wolves.  Fellow senior forward Trevor Johnson also scored 18 points, had a team-high six assists and pulled down seven rebounds.
 
The Prairie Wolves went on a 11-0 run over a six minute stretch in the first half to open up a double digit lead and Grace was never able to get back within single digits.  NWU ended the second half on a 9-2 run to build up a 21 point halftime lead.
 
In the second half, NWU maintained the 20-point lead and extended it to as many as 25 points with just over 5:00 remaining before backup players finished out the game.
 
After shooting just 40.6 percent in the first half, the Prairie Wolves caught fire and hit 57.7 percent in the second half.  NWU finished the game shooting 48.3 percent from the floor, 40.0 percent from 3-point land and 72.0 percent from beyond the arc.
 
Besides the 18 points from Scheitel and Johnson, Eric Jackson scored 16 points, with Jonah Bradley and Trey Bardsley each scoring 10.  All three starting guards hit a pair of 3-point baskets.
 
Grace was led by Hakeem Stewart who scored 11 points with Spencer Plank chipping in 10 points.
 
Nebraska Wesleyan will be back at home on Tuesday night to host Nebraska Christian College at 7 pm.
