YANKTON, S.D. – The Nebraska Wesleyan women's soccer team played a competitive first half at Mount Marty on Wednesday night, but the game got away from the Prairie Wolves in the second period as the Lancers pulled away for a 5-0 win at Crane Youngworth Stadium.
Mount Marty, which came into the contest 1-0-1, had four different goal-scorers. Nebraska Wesleyan fell to 1-2-1 on the season, while the Lancers improved to 2-0-1. Their draw was 1-1 at York on August 29.
The Prairie Wolves were competitive with the Lancers for most of the first half, but the hosts scored a pivotal second goal with two minutes left in the period. After the halftime break, Mount Marty controlled play throughout the second half and tacked on three more goals.
Nebraska Wesleyan recorded one shot on goal. Just past the 64-minute mark,
Emily Jasa sent a free-kick cross into
Macie Conner, who attempted to head the ball past charging keeper Miranda Hood, but Hood made the save.
Cassidy Hofstetter made her first save of the night on a low shot from Baylee Beck in the fifth minute, followed by three more saves. In the 19th minute, the Lancers got on the board when Rhily Grim found space on the left side of the area and tucked a shot inside the right post.
The Prairie Wolves appeared poised to enter halftime down just one goal, but Julieanne Donnelly doubled the Lancers' lead with a right-footed finish with just 2:55 remaining in the half.
After halftime, the Prairie Wolves did a better job of maintaining possession and keeping the Lancers off the board. Hofstetter made three saves in the half before
Catthi Pham subbed in at goalkeeper in the 80th minute. The Lancers got on the board shortly after, when Alyssa Rios headed in a corner kick.
Avery Hoskins added a fourth goal in the 90th minute. A Lancer poked the ball forward into space for Hoskins, who slotted a shot past Pham. Hoskins then had another chance in the middle of the field and fired past Pham with 23 seconds remaining.
Mount Marty outshot Nebraska Wesleyan 21-1 in the match, including a 13-0 edge in the first half. Hofstetter was credited with ten saves.
The Prairie Wolves will be back at home hosting Midland University on Saturday, September 12 at 5:00 PM.
