Men's Basketball Wins the Grind in Cedar Rapids, Sweep Coe with 78–71 road victory

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Nebraska Wesleyan University's men's basketball team did not blink Saturday afternoon. In a building where pace slows, possessions matter, and mistakes are punished, the Prairie Wolves stayed composed, stayed connected, and walked out with a 78–71 win over Coe College to complete the regular-season sweep of the Kohawks.

Behind a poised, efficient performance from Christian Winn and a balanced effort that mixed timely shot-making with disciplined defense, Nebraska Wesleyan earned its fifth straight victory and tightened its grip at the top of the American Rivers Conference standings.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The afternoon began with physicality. The two teams combined for just 12 points over the first three and a half minutes, trading stops and contested looks as neither side found rhythm. Nebraska Wesleyan struck first behind a spark off the bench. Shortly after checking in, Neal Mosser buried a pair of deep three-pointers in quick succession, flipping the energy and forcing Coe to defend the perimeter.

Seth Newton added a tough finish moments later to push the Prairie Wolves in front 19–15 at the midway point of the opening half. Coe responded with a short run to close the gap, but Nebraska Wesleyan answered again. A Kason Simpson layup and a Newton triple steadied the visitors, and Nick Howard followed with a three-point play that extended the lead to four with just over four minutes remaining.

Even as the Kohawks found baskets inside late in the half, Nebraska Wesleyan closed with purpose. Howard capped the stretch with a strong finish in traffic as the Prairie Wolves scored five of the final seven points, carrying a 35–30 advantage into the break.

The second half belonged to Nebraska Wesleyan's guards.

The Prairie Wolves opened the period with an 11–7 blitz, highlighted by two confident three-pointers from Winn. His shooting stretched the floor and created space for Nebraska Wesleyan to operate, pushing the lead to nine and silencing the crowd. Moments later, Howard drilled a three off a Winn assist, continuing a surge that showcased the visitors' unselfish ball movement.

Coe refused to fade quietly, trimming the margin with a short run, but Nebraska Wesleyan countered again. Howard and Mosser scored on consecutive possessions, and when Mosser finished at the rim with 8:37 remaining, the Prairie Wolves' lead ballooned to 11.

The Kohawks made one final push, stringing together an 11–5 run to cut the deficit to 67–62 with just under four minutes to play. The moment demanded composure, and Winn delivered. He sliced through the lane for a steadying layup, halting the run and reasserting control.

From there, Nebraska Wesleyan closed the door. Jared Townsley knocked down a dagger three from the wing, and Howard and Winn calmly converted at the free-throw line down the stretch to seal the road victory.

Winn led all scorers with 22 points on an ultra-efficient 7-of-10 shooting performance, including a near-flawless night from beyond the arc. It marked his third 20-point outing of the season, and his presence loomed larger than the box score, guiding the Prairie Wolves through critical possessions.

Howard followed with 18 points, extending his streak to seven consecutive games in double figures. Mosser provided a key lift off the bench with 13 points, while Townsley chipped in 12, including the late three that put the game out of reach.

Nebraska Wesleyan shot 47.3 percent from the field and finished with 26 points in the paint, continuing a season-long trend of offensive efficiency. The Prairie Wolves have now shot 47 percent or better in 10 games this year. Defensively, they forced nine turnovers and held Coe to 36.7 percent shooting in the first half, setting the tone for the afternoon.

With the win, Nebraska Wesleyan improves to 15–5 overall and 10–1 in A-R-C play, completing the regular-season sweep of Coe and extending its winning streak to five.
