Lincoln, Neb. – Nebraska Wesleyan women's soccer opened its 2025 home campaign with a 5-4 loss to Illinois College, Sunday afternoon. The loss moves Nebraska Wesleyan to 0-2, while Illinois College improved to 2-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
After failing to score at Concordia, Nebraska Wesleyan's offense came to life early in the match, totaling four shots before
Emily Abeyta broke the ice with a goal in the 22nd minute. However, the Lady Blues quickly shifted the momentum with goals in the 25th and 29th minutes to go ahead 2-1. Looking to retake control, Nebraska Wesleyan would manage two more shots in the half but failed to score as Illinois College brought a 2-1 lead into the break.
Second Half
Illinois College came out firing in the second half, scoring a goal in the 46th minute to go up 3-1. Nebraska Wesleyan responded by taking four shots in the ensuing five minutes, with none finding the back of the net. Then, disaster struck as the Lady Blues scored two goals in a span of three minutes to go up 5-1. Facing near impossible odds, the Black and Gold went to work, with
Averie Hike cutting the deficit to three on a 62nd minute goal. From there, NWU continued to fight, firing off six consecutive shots before Abeyta logged her second goal of the game in the 84th minute.
Averie Hike scored her second goal less than a minute later to make the score 5-4. The Prairie Wolves were unable to get the game tying goal as Illinois College managed to run out the clock.
