Nebraska Wesleyan University and Lincoln Community Learning Centers Launch Free Youth Baseball & Softball Camp

LINCOLN, Neb. (June 23, 2025) – Nebraska Wesleyan University, in partnership with the Lincoln Community Learning Centers, is hosting a free youth baseball and softball camp aimed at introducing and growing the sports within the local community. The four-day camp kicks off today, Monday, June 23rd, and will run through Thursday, June 26th, at NWU stadiums in the state-of-the-art Sandhills Global Youth Complex.

This collaborative initiative is designed to provide accessible opportunities for Lincoln youth, particularly those who might not otherwise have the chance to experience organized baseball or softball. Campers, ranging from elementary to middle school age, will receive instruction from Nebraska Wesleyan student-athletes and coaching staff, focusing on fundamental skills such as hitting, pitching, fielding, and base running, all within a fun and encouraging environment.

"Our main goal with this camp is simple: introduce the game of baseball and softball to these campers and hopefully ignite a passion for the game that lasts a lifetime," said NWU Head Baseball Coach Jeff Christy. "It's about more than just drills; it's about making a positive impact and showing kids how much joy these sports can bring."

The camp's "free of charge" model is made possible by Nebraska Wesleyan University including generous gifts from individuals committed to community enrichment and youth development.

Rudy Gres IV, a senior first basemen for the NWU baseball team and one of the student-athlete instructors, expressed the sentiment shared by many volunteers. "Any chance to help grow the game and work with kids is something I'm always excited to do, so when I was asked to be part of this camp, it was an easy yes. I hope the kids are able to learn some things from us as college players and coaches, but more than anything, I just want them to have fun.I came from a background where resources for baseball were limited, so being in a position to give back in this way really hits home!"

Kristy Chambers, a curriculum specialist for Lincoln Community Learning Centers, highlighted the impact of the partnership. "Our partnership with Nebraska Wesleyan and with the Sandhills Global Youth Complex is an opportunity for our kids to see the possibilities that could exist for them in a college or university setting. In addition to having fun learning new baseball and softball skills, our middle school kids will get a chance to see athletes that they can relate to playing a sport they love.  We hope these opportunities are a foundation that our middle school youth can build on for their future."

The camp aims to be a cornerstone in fostering a deeper interest in baseball and softball across Lincoln, helping to develop the next generation of local talent and fans. Members of the media are invited to attend and cover the camp's activities.
