Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader, Takes Series Against Dubuque

Lincoln, NE (April 5, 2025) - Nebraska Wesleyan baseball earned a pair of victories over Dubuque Saturday afternoon to notch its first American Rivers Conference series victory of the 2025 season. With the wins, Nebraska Wesleyan improves to 15-8 overall, and 4-5 in A-R-C play.

GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED

After a scoreless first inning, Dubuque broke open the scoring on a Prairie Wolf error in the second to go ahead 1-0. The two defenses then settled into a pitchers dual as the third and fourth innings saw no scoring by either team. Dubuque would double their lead in the fifth thanks to a two out RBI double. Trailing 2-0, Nebraska Wesleyan went to work in the bottom of the sixth as Duncan Ortega cut the Spartan lead in half with a sacrifice fly that scored Brady Bell. After surrendering a run in the top of the seventh, Nebraska Wesleyan rallied back with a three run bottom frame that saw Aaron Chazin and Carter Betts pick up RBIs. Dubuque went on to tie the game at four in the eighth, only for the Black and Gold take the lead for good on a Tommy Fiocchi triple. Fiocchi then scored on an Aaron Chazin single. In the ninth, NWU called in Brady Bell to close out the game. Bell obliged by recording three consecutive outs to clinch a 6-4 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The rubber match of the series carried a similar theme to the previous two games as both defenses continued to play well. The Prairie Wolves would go up 3-0 in the fourth as Aaron Chazin drove in Tommy Fiocchi and Jake Shedarowich on a single. However, Dubuque refused to lie down as they responded with a run in the sixth. NWU quickly answered, courtesy of a Carter Betts RBI single in the bottom half of the inning. Dubuque attempted ro rally in the seventh as the Spartans scored two runs and had two runners in scoring position with two outs, before Robbie Ross worked out of a jam to preserve a 4-3 lead. Ross would go on to finish the game and pick up his first save of the season.
