CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Nebraska Wesleyan Baseball fell 11-1 in seven innings to No. 22 Coe College in the series opener Tuesday at Bill Quinby Field. The Prairie Wolves managed four hits against Coe's starter, who went the distance with seven strikeouts and no walks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
NWU's lone run came in the fourth when Carter Betts singled, stole second, and advanced to third on Easton Johnson's single to left. Brady Bell drove him in with a sacrifice fly. Betts finished 1-for-3 with a run and a stolen base, while Johnson and Rudy Gres IV each added hits.
Defensive miscures proved costly. Five errors led to eight unearned runs, including a six-run second inning for Coe. Owen Duckworth took the loss (0-3), allowing seven runs (two earned) in 2.1 innings. James Van Cleave and Blaine Walker combined for 3.2 innings of relief.
Coe capitalized early, scoring six in the second on three hits, two errors, and a wild pitch. They added another in the third and four more in the sixth, three of which were unearned.
The Prairie Wolves (15-11, 4-6 A-R-C) will look to rebound in Saturday's doubleheader, starting at 1 p.m.
