Baseball Caps RussMatt Invitational with 11-8 Win, Improves to 10-1 Under Coach Christy

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Nebraska Wesleyan Baseball closed out the RussMatt Invitational in style Saturday, defeating Albertus Magnus 11-8 in a high-scoring affair. The Prairie Wolves improved to 10-1 on the season, surpassing their win total from all of last year, and capped their Florida trip with a statement victory under first-year head coach Jeff Christy.

Duncan Ortega delivered a four-RBI performance, and the offense piled up 16 hits to secure the win. Cesar Salas earned the victory in relief, and Brady Bell locked down the save as Nebraska Wesleyan showcased its depth and resilience.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Nebraska Wesleyan struck first in the opening frame. Aaron Chazin led off with a double, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on Duncan Ortega's sacrifice fly to right field.

Albertus Magnus responded quickly in the bottom of the first, plating four runs on a combination of timely hitting and a Nebraska Wesleyan error. The Falcons capitalized on a double, a single, and a sacrifice fly to take a 4-1 lead.

The Prairie Wolves answered in the top of the second, erupting for four runs to reclaim the lead. A throwing error allowed one run to score, and Carter Betts cleared the bases with a RBI triple to tie the game. Ortega followed with an RBI single to give Nebraska Wesleyan a 5-4 edge.

Albertus Magnus regained the lead in the third, scoring two runs on a fielder's choice and a single to right field. But the Prairie Wolves tied it again in the fourth when Tommy Fiocchi tagged up and scored on a sacrifice fly.

Nebraska Wesleyan took control for good in the fifth. Rudy Gres IV drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, and Fiocchi added an RBI single to make it 8-6. Gres IV then delivered the dagger in the seventh, launching a two-run homer to left field to extend the lead to 10-6.

The Falcons threatened in the late innings, scoring two runs in the seventh, but Nebraska Wesleyan's bullpen held firm. Cesar Salas tossed 3.1 innings of one-hit ball, striking out three, and Brady Bell worked a scoreless ninth to secure the save.
