AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Nebraska Wesleyan University baseball outdueled Fontbonne University in a high-scoring affair Friday, securing a 10-7 victory at the RussMatt Invitational in Florida. The Prairie Wolves' offense exploded for 17 hits, including key extra-base knocks, to overcome an early deficit and claim their ninth win of the season.
How It Happened
Fontbonne struck first in the top of the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly. Nebraska Wesleyan responded in the bottom of the second when Jack Carver put the ball in play to tie the game at 1-1.
The Griffins regained the lead in the third, plating two runs on a double and a walk to make it 3-1. The Prairie Wolves answered in the bottom half of the inning, tying the game at 3-3 thanks to RBI singles from Easton Johnson and Duncan Ortega.
Nebraska Wesleyan took its first lead in the fourth when Carver delivered another RBI single, putting the Prairie Wolves ahead 4-3. Fontbonne tied it in the fifth on a sacrifice fly, then retook the lead in the sixth on a fielder's choice, making it 5-4.
The Prairie Wolves' offense came alive in the bottom of the sixth. Carter Betts cleared the bases with a three-run triple, then scored on a sacrifice fly to give NWU an 8-5 lead. Tyler Merkel provided insurance in the eighth with a two-run homer to left field, extending the lead to 10-5.
Fontbonne threatened in the ninth, scoring two runs, but Owen Ducksworth shut the door in relief to secure the 10-7 win.
