Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Nebraska Wesleyan Falls Just Short in 63-60 Loss to Wartburg

WAVERLY, Iowa — In a hard-fought battle that came down to the final seconds, the Nebraska Wesleyan men's basketball team fell to Wartburg 63-60 on Saturday afternoon at Levick Arena. Despite a valiant effort, the Prairie Wolves couldn't overcome a late surge by the Knights, dropping to 16-5 overall and 9-3 in the American Rivers Conference.

How It Happened

The game was a back-and-forth affair from the opening tip, with both teams trading blows in a tightly contested first half. Nebraska Wesleyan came out strong, with Jack Groeteke leading the charge. Groeteke, who finished with a game-high 19 points, knocked down a pair of three-pointers in the first half to keep the Prairie Wolves within striking distance. However, Wartburg's Marshun Williams proved to be a thorn in NWU's side, hitting six three-pointers of his own and finishing with 23 points to pace the Knights.

The first half ended with Wartburg holding a slim 32-24 lead, but the Prairie Wolves came out firing in the second half. Seth Newton and Nick Howard sparked a 6-0 run early in the second half to tie the game up at 37. Carter Glenn, who finished with 16 points and five assists, was instrumental in keeping the offense flowing, while Brown added 11 points, including three clutch three-pointers.

The game remained tight throughout the second half, with neither team able to pull away. With just under three minutes to play, Glenn hit a three-point jumper to tie the game at 56-56, sending the NWU bench into a frenzy. However, Wartburg responded with a 7-2 run, including a Williams three-pointer, to take a 63-58 lead with five seconds to play.

The Prairie Wolves were able to score the last basket of the game, with Glenn driving the length of the floor, scoring an open layup. Unfortunately, for the Prairie Wolves, they ran out of time, unable to force a turnover with just a second remaining. The Knights pulled out the victory 63-60.
