LINCOLN, Neb. – Nebraska Wesleyan men's basketball controlled the game from the opening tip, rolling to an 82-54 victory over Simpson College on Wednesday night at Snyder Arena. The win improves NWU to 17-5 overall and 10-3 in the American Rivers Conference.
How It Happened
NWU wasted no time setting the tone, jumping out to a 15-3 lead in the first five minutes behind back-to-back threes from Seth Newton and seven points from Carter Glenn. The Prairie Wolves' defensive pressure rattled Simpson early, forcing four turnovers in the opening seven minutes.
Nick Howard made his presence felt inside, scoring a bucket midway through the half to push NWU's lead to double digits. Simpson tried to respond, but Conner Brown answered immediately with a nice stepback jumper late in the shot clock and a pair free throws to keep momentum in Nebraska Wesleyan's favor.
A late 8-5 surge before halftime, highlighted by a dunk from a cutting Andrew Brewer, sent NWU into the break up 42-26. The Prairie Wolves shot 60.7% from the field in the first half, while holding Simpson to just 39.1%.
The second half followed the same script. Jack Groeteke began to dominate the paint, and Glenn facilitated the offense, dishing out six assists on the night. Simpson came out fighting, knocking down threes and forcing chaos for the Prairie Wolves offense. The storm even cut it to single digits with 12:42 left to play. Any hope of a comeback was squandered by the Prairie Wolves shortly after. A quick 13-0 run capped by an Groeteke strong finish with two Simpson players draped all over him gave NWU complete control. The Prairie Wolves' lead ballooned to 28 with sixteen seconds to play after a three-pointer from Amun-Ra Collins.
Simpson never found its rhythm, struggling to break down NWU's defense. The Storm committed 17 turnovers, leading to 26 NWU points. The Prairie Wolves dominated the glass, outrebounding Simpson 50-24, including 16 offensive rebounds leading to 15 second-chance points.
