Lincoln, NE – (February 22, 2025)- Nebraska Wesleyan women's basketball earned a hard fought and well deserved 86-78 victory over Buena Vista, Saturday afternoon. With the win, NWU concludes the 2024-25 season with a 2-23 overall record, and a 1-15 mark in American Rivers Conference play. Buena Vista falls to 8-17 overall and 3-13 in conference play.
How It Happened
After honoring Miranda Oesterreich on senior day, Nebraska Wesleyan raced out to a 13-3 lead in the early stages of the first quarter. Tessa Skelton paced the early surge with five points. From there, Buena Vista fought to claw back into the game, but timely shooting from Maddie Demke and Tessa Skelton kept the Beavers at bay. Demke finished the first quarter with a team high nine points, while Skelton tallied eight as NWU brought a 25-17 lead into the second frame.
Nebraska Wesleyan continued to roll in the second quarter, bolstering its lead to 14 with an 8-2 run over the first 5:15 of the quarter. The Beavers responded with a 5-0 run to cut the Prairie Wolf lead to 33-24, but Nebraska Wesleyan pressed the gas with a 14-6 flurry to take a 47-30 lead into the locker room. Nebraska Wesleyan shot a blistering 48 percent from the floor in the first half.
After a Rhyanne Mackling free throw gave NWU an 18 point lead, Buena Vista refused to lie down, cutting the lead to 48-35 on a quick 5-0 run. NWU would answer back with a pair of Carney Black free throws. The remainder of the third quarter saw Buena Vista continue to cut into Nebraska Wesleyan's lead, but key shots from Maddie Demke and Carney Black the Beavers at arms length.
Leading by eight, and looking to secure their first conference win of the season, Nebraska Wesleyan seemingly took control of the game on a three point shot from Tessa Skelton that capped a 5-0 run and put NWU up by 13. From there Buena Vista rallied, going on a 14-4 run to make the score 73-70, NWU, with just over three minutes to play. Needing a basket to flip the momentum, Nebraska Wesleyan once again turned to Maddie Demke. Demke answered the call in a big way, as she was fouled on a made lay up. With the opportunity to go up by six, Demke drained the free throw, and flipped all the momentum back to Nebraska Wesleyan. The Prairie Wolves proceeded to close the game with a 13-8 run and earn an 86-78 victory.

Maddie Demke led all scorers with 20 points, while tallying seven assists, six rebounds, and four steals. Carney Black finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds to secure a double-double, while Tessa Skelton finished with 18 points. Mackenzie Griffin chipped in 12 points.
