Defense Proves Key in Women's Soccer's 1-0 Win over Buena Vista

LINCOLN, Neb. (September 25, 2024) – The Nebraska Wesleyan Prairie Wolves Women's Soccer team earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the Buena Vista Beavers on September 25, 2024, at Abel Stadium. The win improved Nebraska Wesleyan's record to 5-5-0, while Buena Vista dropped to 5-3-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The match remained scoreless throughout the first half, with Nebraska Wesleyan applying consistent pressure but unable to break through the Buena Vista defense. The Prairie Wolves dominated possession holding the ball for 69% of the time and outshooting the Beavers 14-0 in the first 45 minutes. Despite several good opportunities, including shots from Averie Hike and Aniaya Reed, Buena Vista's goalkeeper made key saves to keep the game level.

The breakthrough finally came in the 69th minute when Natalie Cummins scored her second goal of the season, assisted by Hannah Churchill, after a well-placed shot on a free kick from just outside the box. The goal proved to be the game-winner as the Prairie Wolves' defense held strong, preventing the Beavers from registering a single shot  for the entire match.

Nebraska Wesleyan tallied 31 shots overall, with 13 on target. Buena Vista finished the match with 12 saves, but it wasn't enough to prevent the Prairie Wolves from securing the victory.
