Softball Secures Two Victories on Friday

Lincoln, Neb.- Nebraska Wesleyan softball bounced back from a tough 4-3 loss on Thursday by defeating Saint Mary's University and Elizabethtown College.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Saint Mary's scored one run in the bottom of the third to break a 0-0 tie.
  • The Prairie Wolves responded with two runs in the fourth. The first run came courtesy of a Kamdyn Sprunk RBI single that scored Jenna Kimberling. Sprunk would score on a Hanna Roth single later in the inning.
  • Nebraska Wesleyan exploded for seven runs in the top of the fifth. Paige Davison got the inning started with an RBI double that scored Shelby Gunther. Kamdyn Sprunk would score Davison and Jenna Kimberling on an RBI double later in the inning. Then Hanna Roth continued the rally with an RBI double. Roth would score on an Amber Kosmicki single. Kosmicki would score after a throwing error on a hit by Lyndsey Roth. Val Gerlach put the finishing touch on the inning with an RBI single that scored Lynsdey Roth. 
  • The Prairie Wolves held the Cardinals to zero runs in the bottom half of the inning and secured a 9-1 run rule victory.
  • Elise Warneke secured a complete game victory. In five innings, Warneke allowed one earned run on three hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Nebraska Wesleyan came out swinging scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The first run came on a Lyndsey Roth RBI single that scored Hanna Roth. Sami MacDonald put the Prairie Wolves up 2-0 on a sacrifice bunt that scored Amber Kosmicki. A Val Gerlach double made the game 3-0.
  • Elizabethtown came right back with two runs in the top of the second. However, the Prairie Wolves scored three more to take a 6-2 lead. Hanna Roth made the game 4-2 on a sacrifice fly. Then Sami MacDonald hit an RBI double that scored Lyndsey Roth and Amber Kosmicki.
  • Elizabethtown took a 9-6 lead thanks to a seven run fourth inning.
  • Down to their final three outs, Nebraska Wesleyan had to rally. Hanna Roth got the game within one run on an RBI double that scored Bre Schneidewind. Addie Duranski also scored via throwing error on the play.
  • Sami MacDonald tied the game with an RBI single that scored Hanna Roth.
  • Now in extra innings, Elizabethtown retook a 10-9 lead in the top of the eighth. The Prairie Wolves responded with a Bre Schneidewind double to tie the game at ten.
  • Elizabethtown scored one run in the top of the ninth. Once again Nebraska Wesleyan responded as Lyndsey Roth tied the game with a sacrifice fly.
  • After holding Elizabethtown to zero runs in the top of the 10th, Bre Schneidewind hit a walk of single that scored Sami MacDonald and gave Nebraska Wesleyan a wild 12-11 victory.

Nebraska Wesleyan will play two games on Saturday, March 9th. The first is against SUNY Geneseo, with first pitch set for 9:15 a.m. The second is against the University of Northwestern, with first pitch set for 1:45 p.m.
