Baseball Unable to Secure Sweep of Westminster

LINCOLN, Neb. (February 19, 2024) - The Nebraska Wesleyan baseball team fell to 2-1, following an 8-7 loss to Westminster College on Monday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a one, two, three top of the first, Westminster opened the scoring in the bottom of the inning. The Blue Jays used a pair of RBI singles to gain a 2-0 lead and later scored a third run on an RBI groundout. 
  • Westminster blew the game open with a two out rally in the third. The Blue Jays increased their lead to 4-0 on an RBI single and scored two more on another single.
  • Nebraska Wesleyan got on the board with a Jake Gerardis RBI single that scored Brayden Harvey. Gerardis would score late in the inning on an error to make the score 6-2.
  • The Prairie Wolves cut further into the deficit in the seventh inning scoring two more runs on an Evan Kling RBI single.
  • Westminster responded in the eighth with a two run inning to make the score 8-4 as the game entered the ninth.
  • Nebraska Wesleyan rallied in the ninth courtesy of a two out, three run home run by Owen Machal. However, NWU was unable to tie the game as Westminster secured the final out of the game to take game three of the series.
  • Bobby Simmons tossed three innings and was credited with the loss. Simmons gave up five earned runs and recorded four strikeouts.

Nebraska Wesleyan will travel to the Homefield Baseball Complex in Kansas City, Kansas, to take on Grinnell College in a three game series. Nebraska Wesleyan will play a double header on Saturday, February 24th, with game one beginning at 11:00 a.m. While game two will begin at 1:30 p.m. The final game of the series will be on Sunday, February 25th at 11:00 a.m.
