Women's Basketball Opens Strong but Falls Short Against Bellevue

Box Score BELLEVUE, Neb. (December 4th, 2024) - Nebraska Wesleyan women's basketball came out firing Wednesday night, building early momentum before Bellevue pulled away for a 77-55 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Prairie Wolves stormed out to a 12-6 lead in the first quarter, sparked by a balanced attack. Bellevue quickly responded with a 6-0 run to tie the game at 12, but NWU reclaimed the edge on a smooth Jada Smith jump shot, going up 14-12 with two minutes remaining in the quarter. Carney Black's buzzer-beating layup helped Nebraska Wesleyan end the first tied at 16.

The second quarter saw the Bears start to pull away, but the Prairie Wolves stayed in the hunt with timely baskets from Genesis Watson, Jada Smith, Tessa Skelton, and Carney Black. Despite their efforts, Bellevue carried a 37-28 advantage into halftime.

NWU came out determined in the third quarter, trading baskets with Bellevue in the early minutes. However, a three-pointer midway through the period sparked an 18-8 Bears run, leaving the Prairie Wolves trailing 63-44 entering the fourth. Despite their best efforts in the final frame, NWU couldn't overcome the deficit as Bellevue secured the win.

Both teams showed efficiency from the floor, with Nebraska Wesleyan shooting 43% compared to Bellevue's 40%. Carney Black shined for NWU, notching her first double-double of the season, while Jada Smith reached double figures for the third time this year.
