Late Goal Sinks Nebraska Wesleyan in 1-0 Loss to Wartburg

WAVERLY, Iowa (October 9, 2024) – Nebraska Wesleyan women's soccer fell 1-0 to Wartburg in a hard-fought road match at Salzwedel Field. The Prairie Wolves now sit at 5-7-1 overall and 0-2-1 in American Rivers Conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Nebraska Wesleyan held their own against a tough Wartburg squad for much of the match, with goalkeeper Jena Schultz leading the defensive effort. Schultz made two saves in the first half as the Prairie Wolves limited Wartburg to just nine shots before the break. The NWU defense stood firm, and the first half ended scoreless despite Wartburg's offensive pressure.

In the second half, Wartburg continued to push forward, outshooting the Prairie Wolves 14-2. Schultz added six more saves, but the constant pressure from Wartburg eventually broke through. In the 88th minute, Greta Rothe scored the game-winning goal off an assist from Natalie Thiesfeld, putting the Knights ahead 1-0. Despite some late attempts, NWU couldn't find the equalizer and fell just short in the final minutes. Faith Forehand led the Prairie Wolves offensively totalling two shots and NWU's lone shot on goal.
