Box Score LINCOLN, Neb. (October 2nd, 2024) - Nebraska Wesleyan opened conference play with a close five set victory over Simpson College, Wednesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Simpson and Nebraska Wesleyan battled for control early in set one, with two lead changes and three ties. Simpson then seized momentum with a four-point run to go up 13-9. From there, the Storm kept the Prairie Wolves at arm's length, eventually pulling away for a 25-19 victory.
In set two, Simpson looked to press their advantage, jumping out to a 9-3 lead. However, a timely timeout seemed to refocus the Prairie Wolves, who clawed their way back and tied it at 21. NWU then outscored Simpson 4-2 to secure a 25-23 victory and even the match.
The Prairie Wolves carried that momentum into set three, racing to a 20-12 lead. But Simpson responded with an 11-4 run of their own, narrowing the gap to 24-23. With the set hanging in the balance, Addie Thomas delivered a decisive kill to give NWU a 2-1 match lead.
Simpson wouldn't go quietly, grinding out a 25-20 victory in set four to force a fifth and final set. After falling behind 4-2 in set five, NWU dug deep and responded with a dominant 13-4 run, clinching the match with a 15-8 victory.
The win improves Nebraska Wesleyan's record to 13-3 overall and 1-0 in American Rivers Conference play.
