Football Earns Victory on Wesleyan Weekend

LINCOLN, Neb. (September 30, 2023) - Nebraska Wesleyan responded to its first loss of the year by dominating Luther College on Wesleyan Weekend. With the win, Nebraska Wesleyan improves to 4-1 (2-1) on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After forcing Nebraska Wesleyan to punt on it's opening possession, Luther used a 66 yard touchdown pass from Beau Cornwell to Raul Medrano III to take a 7-0 lead.
  • Nebraska Wesleyan went to work on its next possession, going 75 yards in eight plays and scoring on a nine yard touchdown pass from Carter Terry to Victor Guzman to tie the game at seven. 
  • After this touchdown, the defenses tightened up and neither team was able to score. This remained the case until midway through the second quarter when Carter Terry threw a 74 yard touchdown pass to Cole Siems to put the Prairie Wolves up 14-7.
  • After forcing the Norse to punt, Nebraska Wesleyan scored quickly on a 43 yard touchdown run by Nathan Athouris. The score put Nebraska Wesleyan up 21-7.
  • Neither offense was able to score for the rest of the half and Nebraska Wesleyan held a 21-7 lead as the game went to halftime.
  • On Luther's first drive of the second half, the Norse drove 42 yards in 11 plays and cut Nebraska Wesleyan's lead to 11 on a 28 yard field goal by Sean Medcalfe.
  • Nebraska Wesleyan responded with a long 11 play 75 yard yard drive that was capped off with a one yard touchdown run by Nathan Athouris to go up 28-10.
  • On Luther's ensuing possession, Max Brinker picked off Beau Cornwell and set Nebraska Wesleyan's offense up at the Norse 43. Nebraska Wesleyan's offense capitalized on the turnover by going 43 yards in seven plays with Carter Terry capping off the drive on a two yard touchdown run.
  • While Nebraska Wesleyan wouldn't score again in the game, the defense continued to play stout football and anchored down a 35-10 victory.
