Baseball Splits Slugfest at Grinnell

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1
  • John Haimowitz drove in the first run of the game in the top of the first inning, starting an afternoon in which the scoreboard would be lit up by both sides. 
  • Kaleb Knox scored after Aaron Chazin reached first on an error, regaining the lead for the Prairie Wolves in the top of the third inning, 2-1.
  • The fourth inning featured two more runners coming home for the black and gold, as Alex Angele scored on an RBI sac fly by Noah Unger. Later in the inning Hunter Zielasko would score after the Grinnell pitcher was called for a balk. 
  • A pair of home runs in the sixth inning by Jason English and Aaron Chazin brought the Prairie Wolves lead to its largest at 9-2. The Pioneers scored six unanswered runs before Robbie Ross slammed the door shut for the Prairie Wolves as the black and gold win 9-8.
Game 2
  • Game two's scoring started just as quickly as its predecessor. Noah Unger drove in Hunter Zielasco with an RBI single. Unger would score later in the inning on a Jason English sacrifice fly to center field.
  • In the top of the second inning, Dylan Howell scored on a single by Alex Angele. Duncan Ortega would score on a wild pitch, giving the Prairie Wolves a 4-2 lead. 
  • Both offense exploded for multiple runs in the fourth inning. The black and gold combined five runs and capitalized on a Grinnell wild pitch and error, tallying four runs in the inning. However the Pioneers did not back down and shortened the deficit in the bottom half by scoring four runs to cut the score to 9-8 NWU.
  • NWU would add another in the top of the sixth inning thanks to a Jason English sacrifice fly to center field which brought Noah Unger into score, regaining the lead for the Prairie Wolves.
  • After taking a 12-10 lead into the seventh frame, the black and gold were unable to close the game out surrendering one run in the seventh inning, before a walk off win by the Pioneers, 12-13.
