Baseball Gets Swept by A-R-C's Own, University of Dubuque

HOW IT HAPPENED

GAME 1

  • In the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, the Prairie Wolves fell behind early and were never able to get back in it as the Spartans won by a score of 12-3.
  • The second inning is what put the Prairie Wolves into a hole as Dubuque took an early 6-0 lead.
  • Offensively, the Prairie Wolves were unable to cut into the lead as they remained scoreless through four innings.
  • The Spartans scored three more runs in the fourth and fifth innings, extending their lead to 9-0.
  • Nebraska Wesleyan was able to get on the board in the fifth inning, as Alex Angele hit an RBI single that brought home two runs.
  • Any legitimate chance of a Prairie Wolves comeback was put into serious doubt as the Spartans offense, which has been outstanding this whole series, scored three more runs over the next three innings.
  • It looked as if NWU was beginning to make a rally in the bottom of the eighth as they had the bases loaded, but were only able to bring across one run on a RBI sacrifice fly by Evan Kling.

GAME 2

  • The Prairie Wolves struggled mightily at the plate in Game 2, as they only recorded 5 hits and weren't able to score in a 11-0 shutout loss.
  • Similar to Game 1, Nebraska Wesleyan fell into an early deficit as the Spartans took a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
  • Pitcher Bryson Knapp settled in, as he was able to keep the game at a competitive 3-0 score through the first four innings.
  • The Spartans offense broke the game open in the fifth and sixth innings, scoring four more runs and taking a commanding 8-0 lead.
  •  Dubuque scored two more runs in the seventh inning to reach the game's final score of 11-0.
  • Despite taking the loss, Knapp had a solid start on the mound. After a rocky first inning, he allowed just one run on three hits over the next three innings.
