Game Recap: Football |

Myers Totals 213 Yards of Offense; Not Enough to Stop Dubuque

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first quarter was all University of Dubuque. The Spartans found the endzone on the ground and in the air, 0-12.
  • NWU's offense flipped the script in the second quarter. Carter Terry led the Prairie Wolves 75 yards on eight plays, capping things off with a 23-yard touchdown pass to Trace Leners, 7-12.
  • Dubuque tacked on to their five-point lead with 9:25 remaining until halftime. Quarterback Ben Gultig found Wade Sheets on a 31-yard pass for six, 19-7. The score held until the second half.
  • Mishaps on offense hurt Nebraska Wesleyan in the second quarter. NWU turned the ball over three times in the red zone.
  • In their first drive after the break, the black and gold made it clear they weren't going anywhere. Carter Terry did it himself to make things a one-possession game. The senior scrambled into the endzone from four yards out, 14-19.
  • Unfortunately, every time NWU got within distance to potentially tie things up or take the lead, Dubuque found a way to get back on the board.
  • The Spartans matched Terry's rushing touchdown and Cole Siems' 76-yard touchdown that happened later in the third quarter with six of their own. Going into the final 15 minutes, Dubuque was on top of Nebraska Wesleyan University, 20-34.
  • To make things tougher for the Prairie Wolves, the Spartans jumped out to a 20-41 lead with a quick score to begin the fourth.
  • Wide Receiver Victor Guzman caught back-back touchdowns the next two NWU possessions, but time was not in Nebraska Wesleyan's favor.
  • Dubuque would eventually put things away with one last score, 34-48.
  • Coach Keller's squad moves to 1-2 on the season and 0-1 in A-R-C play.

HEAD COACH BRIAN KELLER'S COMMENTS
  • "I couldn't be more proud of the group than the effort they showed today. They laid it all out there and show they are true champions in that regard."
  • "We got in our way on offense. We turned the ball over three times in the red zone, and you can not have that. We bounced back in the second half on the offensive side. Your goal is always to score right away on your first drive coming out of the break and we did that."
  • "The story of our defense the past two weeks is giving up big plays. We have got to find a way to stop giving up big plays."
  • "Our special is still a work in progress. We saw some good things, but then we also saw some mistakes."
  • "There is no reason to cancel practice. We still have a lot to work on."
