Football Loses Overtime Thriller in Mayville

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • If fans were looking for an offensive affair, they got one Saturday in Mayville, North Dakota. Nebraska Wesleyan and Mayville State combined for 103 points and 1,102 yards of total offense.
  • The Comets needed just two plays to get on the board first. On a 38-yard passing touchdown, Mayville took lead, 0-7.
  • NWU answered back later in the first quarter. On the two-yard line, Terry handed the ball off to running back, Trystin Myers, and Myers did the rest, 6-7.
  • To end the first 15 minutes, Mayville State's Tim Salmon hit Javeion Davison in stride for a 79-yard score, 6-14.
  • Getting the ball to start the second quarter, the Prairie Wolves drove 50 yards in 10 plays and capped things off with a five-yard passing touchdown to Bryce Istas, 13-14.
  • For a third straight scoring possession, MSU needed just two plays to extend their lead. Already, Salmon recorded his third touchdown pass of the day and this time it was for 72 yards, 21-13.
  • Finally, NWU scores back-to-back touchdowns without the Comets answering. Midway through the second quarter, Terry found Victor Guzman for an 11-yard score and Trace Leners for a 19-yard score. The Prairie Wolves took their first lead of the ball game, 27-21.
  • Mayville State had some trickery up their sleeve before going into halftime. On fourth down inside the red zone, wide receiver Maalik Flowers lofted the ball up to tight end Chase Denners, who was then able to bring it down for six, 27-28.
  • Nebraska Wesleyan would regain the lead in the third quarter and carry it into the fourth. Cole Siems would score his first touchdown of the day and Trystin Myers would score his second, 40-35.
  • With a whole other quarter left to play, the offensive onslaught from both teams continued. MSU connected on two unanswered touchdowns of their own with 14:20 left in the game. The pressure was back on NWU and they answered with under two minutes remaining, 48-41.
  • The defense was unable to shut down the high-powered Mayville State offense with 1:54 left to go and the Comets would force overtime, 48-48.
  • After a long and methodical 15-play drive, Salmon threw his seventh touchdown of the day for MSU, 48-55.
  • Carter Terry drove the Prairie Wolves down to the Mayville five-yard line. On the tenth play of the drive, he fumbled and the Comets recovered, 48-55.
  • Nebraska Wesleyan University departed Mayville, North Dakota with their first loss of the season.

HEAD COACH BRIAN KELLER'S COMMENTS
  • "We are all disappointed in today's outcome. If you score 48 points, you have to think you're going to come home with a win."
  • "We had costly errors in all phases of teh game. Defensively, we had too many busts in coverages and our tackling needs to improve. Mid-way through the third, we had a 12-point lead but misfired on three offensive series. On special teams, we missed a field goal, an extra point and had a handful of penalties."
  • "Despite the final result, let's not dismiss a number of positives from today. I thought our run defense was solid for the second week in a row. Likewise, we were effective running with Josh Romain behind a nice afternoon from our offensive line.I thought Victor Guzman had a super day with eight catches and another strong performance in the return game."
  • "It's time for the team and staff to re-group and get ready to open conference play next week against Dubuque."
