Baseball Wins Rubber Match, Takes Series Over Central


LINCOLN (May 1, 2022) - The Nebraska Wesleyan baseball team splits its doubleheader with Central College. NWU fell in game one, 16-6 in eight innings, but bounced back to win game two, 9-5, and win the series.

Game One Recap
The Prairie Wolves started game one with a leadoff home run to right field from Evan Kling, the second straight game Kling has homered. Central countered with a run in the top of the second inning and two runs in the top of the fourth inning but NWU had an answer.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Nebraska Wesleyan regained the lead with three runs. Paul Georget drove in the first run of the inning with a single then a groundout in the next at-bat scored Noah Unger. An RBI single from Tyler Merkel plated the final run of the rally and gave the Prairie Wolves a 4-3 advantage.

The Dutch regained the lead in the top of the seventh with four runs but NWU would be able to get two runs back in the bottom half of the inning. Riley Ward drilled a two-run single to left field to make it a 7-6 ballgame. However, Central pulled away with nine runs in the top of the eighth inning to apply the run-rule.

Game Two Recap
Similar to game one, Evan Kling ledoff the game with a solo home run for an early advantage. Kling extended his home run streak to three consecutive games. The next inning, NWU pushed its lead to 4-1. With two outs, Derek Kolbush hit a deep double to left center to drive in two runs then Kolbush scored when Riley Ward drew a bases loaded walk.

NWU continued its offensive attack with another run in the third inning and fourth inning. In the third, Owen Machal hit a sacrifice fly to score Paul Georget. In the fourth, Ward drilled an RBI double to score Kaleb Knox.

After the Dutch gained a run in the top of the sixth inning, the Prairie Wolves pushed the deficit back to four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Ward hit a single to plate Derek Kolbush to make it 7-4. The bottom of the eighth saw NWU score two more runs. The first run on an RBI triple from Knox then second run on a groundout that plated Knox. Brady Harrison then completed the save opportunity in the top of the ninth inning, his first save of the season.

Nebraska Wesleyan plays its final regular season series of the season at Wartburg in Waverly, Iowa on Friday, May 6.
