Nickerson’s Clutch Single Helps Softball Walk-Off Concordia

LINCOLN, Neb. (April 5, 2022) - The Nebraska Wesleyan softball team split its doubleheader with Concordia at University Place Park in Lincoln. NWU was narrowly defeated in a defensive battle in game one, 2-1, but turned around to win game two with a walk-off single, 4-3.

Game One Recap
NWU and CUNE locked into a defensive tussle in game one. The two teams combined for just nine hits and one run. After the Bulldogs plated the game's only run in the fourth inning, the Prairie Wolves put Bre Scheneidewind, the potential tying run, on second base in the bottom of the seventh but were unable to tie the game.

Kailey Meyer tossed a complete game for Nebraska Wesleyan, Meyer's third complete game this season.

Game Two Recap
In game two, the Prairie Wolves wouldn't be held scoreless. After Concordia scored a run in the top of the second inning, NWU countered with a run of its own. Hanna Roth drove a single through the middle of the infield to score Addi Duranski.

Nebraska Wesleyan tied the game again in the bottom of the fourth inning. Abby Armentrout came into pinch hit and knocked a double to the right-centerfield gap. The double scored Sydney Nickerson to make it a 2-2 ballgame.

The Prairie Wolves loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning and trailed by a run. A fielder's choice from Emma Alfieri allowed Nickerson to score from third base and again make it a tie game. But the Bulldogs found a way to escape the jam without giving up another run.

Momentum continued to build for Nebraska Wesleyan as Taylor Styskal led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a deep single down the left-field line and put the winning run on base. Kailey Meyer then moved Styskal in scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Down to their final out of the at-bat, Nickerson delivered a clutch single through the left side of the infield, allowing Styskal to round third and head for home. The Concordia throw looked to be on target but Styskal's path for a slide attempt was blocked and an obstruction call was made to give the Prairie Wolves the run and walk-off win.
