Prairie Wolves Run Rule Dutch In Series Opener

LINCOLN (April 30, 2022) - The Nebraska Wesleyan baseball team beat Central College, 15-5, in seven innings to begin a three-game series between the two teams. In the victory, NWU hit three triples, two home runs, and a double.

The offense was on display in the first inning. Central plated four runs in the top of the first inning but NWU answered back a half-inning later. After a leadoff walk to Evan Kling, Derek Kolbush launched a home run to left field to cut the lead down to two runs. Kolbush's home run was his 12th of the season, which is tied for the most in a single season in program history.

The rally continued for the Prairie Wolves when Owen Machal roped an RBI single to score Kaleb Knox. Two batters later, Nebraska Wesleyan tied the game with another RBI single, this one from Mason Bennett. With the bases loaded and two outs, Kling put NWU ahead with a grand slam to left field.

Nebraska Wesleyan poured on another run in the bottom of the second inning when Knox scored on a sacrifice fly from Riley Ward. In the bottom of the fourth inning, NWU added three runs with back-to-back triples. Ward hit the first triple to score Kling and Kolbush then Machal smacked the second triple to plate Ward.

The Prairie Wolves were able to add a run in the fifth inning when Kling scored on a Kolbush groundout. In the next inning, an error allowed Paul Georget to reach base and plate John Haimowitz. NWU then applied the run-rule in the bottom of the seventh inning when Draven Ray scored on an RBI single from Kaleb Knox.

Noah Unger pitched a complete game for the Prairie Wolves, his second in his last three starts. Unger tossed seven innings of work and registered five strikeouts in the win. Additionally, Unger has only allowed five runs over the last 25 innings he has pitched.
