Walk-Off Grand Slam Gives NWU Game Two Win

Lincoln, Neb. (April 26, 2022) - The Nebraska Wesleyan softball team used a walk-off grand slam from Kailey Meyer to split its doubleheader with Buena Vista at University Place Park in Lincoln. NWU won game two, 8-6, after narrowly dropping game one, 1-0.

Game One Recap
A pitching battle that saw the two teams combine for just seven hits was the story of game one. The Prairie Wolves' offense had a tough time finding much success but managed to work the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth inning. Emily Swoboda hit a leadoff single to start the inning then a pair of walks put two others on.

However, the Beavers dodged the fifth-inning jam without giving up a run. BVU then scored the game's only run in the top of the sixth inning. Nebraska Wesleyan's Kailey Meyer threw a complete game, Meyer's seventh complete game of the season.

Game Two Recap
After the Beavers jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three and a half innings, the Prairie Wolves' offense responded. In the bottom of the third inning, Hanna Roth roped a two-run double to cut the deficit down to three runs. But BVU answered with a run in the fourth inning.

Nebraska Wesleyan rallied in the fifth inning with two more runs. The first run was plated on a single from Paige Davison. Roth then scored on a hard-hit grounder from Taylor Styskal during the next at-bat.

Heading into the bottom of the seventh inning and down to its last out, Kailey Meyer delivered a shot. NWU loaded the bases for Meyer with a batter reaching base on a fielder's choice, a single, followed by a batter getting hit by a pitch. Meyer then slammed a grand slam to left field for the walk-off winner.
