Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader With Game One Thriller

DUBUQUE, Iowa (April 23, 2022) - The Nebraska Wesleyan baseball team swept its doubleheader with the University of Dubuque in Dubuque, Iowa. The Prairie Wolves won a thriller in game one, 1-0, in 11 innings and carried the steam to take game two, 6-4, in seven innings.

Game One Recap
A pitcher duel took place throughout game one, with both starting pitchers throwing at least seven innings and combining for eight strikeouts. NWU's Noah Unger went 7 ⅓ innings on the mound with just one walk and did not allow an earned run. It was the second straight start that Unger did not give a run.

When the moment was ready, NWU seized it. The Prairie Wolves loaded the bases in the top of the 11th inning. Kaleb Knox delivered an RBI single to right field and pushed across the go-ahead the run. Defensively, Nebraska Wesleyan then held Dubuque to secure the win.

Dylan Cox picked up the win, going 3 â…“ innings out of the bullpen. Cox then turned the ball over to Noah Wing in the 11th inning. Wing earned the save for NWU with a groundout to the shortstop.

Game Two Recap
Nebraska Wesleyan cranked up the offense immediately in game two. NWU scored a pair of runs in the first inning on a two-out, two-run RBI double from John Haimowitz for the early advantage.

The Spartans scored a run in the bottom of the first inning but the Prairie Wolves pushed the lead further with four runs in the top of the fourth inning. Derek Kolbush lined an RBI single to plate the first run of the inning. In the next at-bat, an error allowed Riley Ward to reach base and score Tyler Merkel. Kaleb Knox then roped another two-run double to make it a 6-1 advantage. All four of NWU's runs in the inning came with two outs.

Dubuque cut the lead down with two runs in the fifth inning and another run in the sixth inning. But Nebraska Wesleyan shut down any chances of a come back by going three up and three down in the final inning.

Additionally, Noah Wing was credited with the save in game two. On the season, Wing now has five saves, which is tied for most in a season in program history.
