Softball Takes Game One, Late Rally Falls Short In Game Two

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (April 21, 2022) - The Nebraska Wesleyan softball team split its doubleheader with Simpson College in a conference midweek doubleheader in West Des Moines, Iowa. The Prairie Wolves won game one, 5-3, but Simpson won game two, 2-1, to snap NWU's three-game winning streak.

Game One Recap
After Simpson took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, NWU responded with runs in the second and third innings. Bre Schneidewind's RBI single scored Val Gerlach to tie the game. An inning later, Taylor Styskal gave Nebraska Wesleyan the lead with a single through the middle of the infield to plate Hanna Roth.

In the fifth inning, Addi Duranski added another to the scoreboard when she scored on a wild pitch. Duranski's run made it a 3-1 advantage. The Storm tied the game in the fifth but the Prairie Wolves regained the lead a half-inning later.

Styskal put Nebraska Wesleyan on top, 4-3, with a solo home run to centerfield. In the next inning, Duranski scored again, this time off of a single from Sydney Nickerson. The insurance run gave the Prairie Wolves a 5-3 victory for their third straight win.

Kailey Meyer tossed her fourth consecutive complete game in the victory. Meyer allowed just three runs and struck out four batters over seven innings of work.

Game Two Recap
The Storm were able to contain NWU in game two. SC scored a run in the second inning and added another run in the sixth inning. The Prairie Wolves tried to rally a comeback in the top of the seventh inning.

Emma Alfieri smacked a leadoff double to right-center field to start the inning. Two batters later, Addi Duranski moved Alfieri to third base with a single. Hanna Roth then recorded an RBI single to left field to plate Alfieri and make it a 2-1 ballgame. However, the Storm were able to get out of the frame during the next at-bat and end NWU's winning streak.
