Prairie Wolves Win Game One, Nearly Sweep No. 21 Wartburg

LINCOLN, Neb. (April 2, 2022) - The Nebraska Wesleyan softball team split its doubleheader with No. 21 Wartburg at University Place Park in Lincoln. NWU won game one, 8-4, then fell in eight innings, 7-5, in game two. With the win in game one, the Prairie Wolves beat a ranked opponent for the second time this season. Additionally, it is the first win against the Knights since March 30, 2018.

Game One Recap
Nebraska Wesleyan didn't waste any time in knocking off the Knights. NWU scored a run in the first inning with a sacrifice fly from Emma Alfieri to score Hanna Roth. The next inning, Taylor Styskal made the Knights pay off for an error, which made it a 2-1 lead.

The Prairie Wolves extended their lead with five combined runs in the third and fourth innings. Paige Davison knocked a double to score Sydney Nickerson for the first run. Alfieri recorded another sacrifice fly for the second run. Kailey Meyer roped a two-run double then Meyer scored on a single from Addie Duranski to make it a 7-1 margin.

After Wartburg attempted a comeback with three runs in the top of the sixth inning, NWU added an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning. Becca Chloupek scored off of a sacrifice fly from Roth.

Game Two Recap
The Prairie Wolves carried their hot play into game two with a 4-0 lead after three innings. Val Gerlach's double plated Paige Davison for the game's first run. In the second inning, NWU added a pair of runs. Sydney Nickerson scored on a fielder's choice then Taylor Styskal drew a bases loaded walk to score Davison. Davison again came up clutch in the third inning with a single to left field to score Addie Duranski.

But the Knights found a way to switch the momentum and take a 6-5 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning. Bre Schneidewind led off the seventh with a leadoff single. Down to their last out, Nebraska Wesleyan picked up a pivotal base hit from Nickerson. Nickerson's single plated Schneidewind and put the game into extra innings.

However, Wartburg was able to pull away and contain the Prairie Wolves offense in the eighth.
