Baseball Takes Series Against Coe

LINCOLN, Neb. (April 2, 2022) - The Nebraska Wesleyan baseball team split its doubleheader with Coe College at NWU Field in Lincoln. NWU won game one, 7-5, before falling in game two, 10-9. With the game one win, the Prairie Wolves won their first-ever series against the Kohawks in program history.

Game One Recap
The Kohawks scored a pair of runs in the first inning but the Prairie Wolves wouldn't be held scoreless much longer. Evan Kling put NWU on the scoreboard with a solo home run to right field.

In the third inning, Nebraska Wesleyan took the lead with three runs. Riley Ward hit a single but a Coe error allowed John Haimowitz and Kaleb Knox to score as well as move Ward to third base. Jason English then drove in Ward to make it a 4-2 lead.

After the Kohawks plated a run, NWU pushed the lead back to two runs in the fifth inning. A hard hit double down the right field line from Evan Kling scored Ward. An inning later, Derek Kolbush launch a two-run home run over the right field fence to give the Prairie Wolves a 7-4 advantage.

Nebraska Wesleyan then held off Coe over the final four innings. Ward came into pitch in the seventh inning and earned the save.

Game Two Recap
Coe opened the game with five early runs but Nebraska Wesleyan chipped away. Kaleb Knox roped a double to left field. Riley Ward delivered a single in the next at-bat to score Knox for the first Prairie Wolf run.

NWU threatened again in the bottom of the second when it loaded the bases. The Prairie Wolves scrapped a run across when Derek Kolbush drove in Jason English. But the Kohawks were able to escape the jam with a double play later in the inning.

After being held scoreless for three innings, Nebraska Wesleyan was able to break through with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Three consecutive singles from Noah Unger, Kolbush, and Knox cut the lead down to 8-5. However, Coe found a way to get out of the inning before NWU could plate more runs.

In the eighth inning, the Prairie Wolves tied the game with four runs. The late rally was started with a two-run single off the bat of John Haimowitz. Riley Ward then doubled to plate Haimowitz and make it a one score game. NWU tied the game on a single from Evan Kling to score Ward.

But Coe responded with a run in the top of the ninth inning and held Nebraska Wesleyan scoreless in the bottom of the inning.
