Late Home Runs Clinch Softball Sweep

LINCOLN (April 19, 2022) - The Nebraska Wesleyan softball team swept Central College at University Place Park in Lincoln. NWU won game one, 3-2, on a walk-off home run in the 10th inning from Bre Scheneidewind. The Prairie Wolves won game two, 3-2, with a solo home run from Taylor Styskal in the bottom of the sixth inning. It is the first series sweep of the Dutch since NWU joined the American Rivers Conferences in 2016.

Game One Recap
After two scoreless innings, the Prairie Wolves broke through with a run in the bottom of the third inning. Taylor Styskal lined a hard-hit single through the left side of the infield, which scored Paige Davison for the early lead.

NWU added another run in the next inning. Hanna Roth's ground-rule double allowed Addi Duranski to score and make it a two-run game. Central was able to scrape a run across in the top of the fifth inning to bring it back to a one-score game.

Nebraska Wesleyan loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning with only one out but the Dutch found a way to escape the jam without giving up a run. The Prairie Wolves put runners on second and third in the bottom of the seventh inning; again Central was able to work out of the pinch without allowing a run.

After the teams traded scoreless innings through two extra frames, Bre Schneidewind finished it off for the Prairie Wolves in the top of the 10th inning. Schneidewind smacked a home run to left field for the walk-off win.

Game Two Recap
Central plated a run in the first inning but NWU's answer came a few innings later. In the bottom of the third inning, Emily Swoboda came in to pinch-hit with two outs and a runner on second base. Swoboda drilled a home run over the left-center field wall to give the Prairie Wolves a 2-1 advantage.

The Dutch tied the game at two runs apiece in the top of the fourth inning but the long ball proved helpful for NWU. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Taylor Styksal knocked a solo home run to left field. Styskal's home run, the second NWU home run of the game, gave the Prairie Wolves a 3-2 lead heading into the seventh.

Central made it interesting with a pair of hits in the top of the seventh but Nebraska Wesleyan shut down the threat without any damage.
