NWU Nearly Pulls Off Road Upset

DUBUQUE, Iowa. (April 9, 2022) - The Nebraska Wesleyan baseball team dropped a road doubleheader at No. 18 Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa. NWU fell in game one, 6-4, and dropped a heartbreaker in game two, 9-8.

Game One Recap
The Prairie Wolves put the Duhawks on the ropes midway through the opening game with a pair of two-run innings. Derek Kolbush started the run in the third inning with a double to right field to score Evan Kling. The next run came when an error allowed Kolbush to score.

In the fourth inning, Paul Georget roped a two-run double to right field which scored Mason Bennett and John Haimowitz. The double gave NWU a 4-1 margin but LC added a run in the fifth then scored four runs in the seventh inning.

Game Two Recap
After Loras raced out to a 4-0 lead after four innings, Nebraska Wesleyan countered back with eight runs over the next two innings. Derek Kolbush was again the catalyst to the rally. Kolbush drilled a two-run home run in the fifth inning to cut the deficit down to two runs.

The sixth inning started with a leadoff double by Jason English. English would score two at-bats later with a single from Evan Kling. Another double in the inning, this one for Kaleb Knox, gave the Prairie Wolves two more runs and a 5-4 lead. Riley Ward then scored Knox with a single during the next at-bat. Back-to-back RBI singles from Noah Unger and English extended the NWU advantage to 8-4.

But the nationally-ranked Duhawks scored a run in the eighth inning and followed with four more runs in the ninth inning to win by walk-off.
