Broncos Get Past Prairie Wolves

HASTINGS, Neb. (March 29, 2022) - The Nebraska Wesleyan softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader to former conference foe, Hastings College, in Hastings, Nebraska. The Broncos narrowly won game one, 5-4, then took game two, 7-4. It was the first meeting between the two teams since NWU transitioned to NCAA Division III after the 2016 season.

Game One Recap
The Prairie Wolves needed to shake off a little rust in game one after a 19-day hiatus between games. HC scored four runs in the third inning but NWU chipped away in the fourth and sixth innings. Kailey Meyer drove in Bre Schneidewind for the first run then Val Gerlach launched a home run to make it a two-run game.

In the seventh inning, Nebraska Wesleyan struck again. Taylor Styskal made it a one-run margin with a home run. Gerlach then tied the game with a single to score Paige Davison. NWU had runners on first and second but Hastings College found a way to escape the jam. The Broncos then scored the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

In the pitching circle, Kailey Meyer recorded 10 strikeouts and issued just one walk while only giving up two earned runs.

Game Two Recap
Nebraska Wesleyan again needed to answer an early rally from Hastings College in game two. A big third inning allowed NWU to take a 3-2 lead. An error on the Broncos allowed Hanna Roth to score the first run. In the next at-bat, Val Gerlach lined a single to right field, which scored Paige Davison and tied the game. The Prairie Wolves then captured the lead off of the bat of Bre Schneidewind. Schneidewind's single to center field plated Emma Alfieri.

HC found an answer with a run in the third inning then added a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth innings to make it a four-run deficit. However, the Prairie Wolves made it interesting in the final inning. Roth started the inning with a leadoff home run to make it 7-4 but NWU was unable to generate another run.
