Baseball Splits Pair of One-Run Games To Open ARC Play

LINCOLN, Neb. (March 29, 2022) - The Nebraska Wesleyan baseball team split its doubleheader with Simpson College in its 2022 American Rivers Conference opener at NWU Field in Lincoln. SC won game one, 2-1, then NWU bounced back to win another one-score game, 7-6, in game two.

Game One Recap
The opening game started with 21 combined strikeouts between NWU's Dylan Cox and SC's Brady Held. Simpson broke the scoreless jam with a run in the top of the sixth inning. However, the Prairie Wolves would match the score in the bottom half of the inning. Derek Kolbush launched a home run over the left-center field fence. Kaleb Knox would get on base in the next at-bat but the Storm escaped the threat.

Simpson broke the tie in the top of the eighth inning with a home run. NWU put a runner on base in both the bottom of the eighth and ninth innings but could not get the runners to score.

Cox dealt on the mound for the Prairie Wolves, going seven innings and scattered six hits on one run with 10 strikeouts. The seven innings and 10 strikeouts were career-high for Cox. Additionally, in his last three starts, Cox has only allowed one run with 24 strikeouts.

Game Two Recap
Derek Kolbush put Nebraska Wesleyan on the board first in game two with his second home run of the day. Kolbush homered to left field in the bottom of the third inning for a 1-0 lead. The Prairie Wolves tacked on another run an inning later. Jason English smashed a home run to left field to make it a 2-0 ballgame.

After Simpson took the lead with three runs in the top of the fifth inning, NWU tied it a half-inning later. Kolbush scored on a groundout off the bat of John Haimowitz. The Prairie Wolves scored again in the bottom of the sixth inning when Kolbush drove in Darrien Costello-Justus with a single to center field to make it a one-run game.

NWU rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning. After a catcher's interference call, Haimowitz scored to cut the advantage down to 6-5. In the next at-bat, Christian Harris delivered a pinch-hit sacrifice fly to tie the game. Paul Georget then gave NWU the lead after his grounder found a gap and scored English.

Defensively, the Prairie Wolves held the Storm scoreless the next two innings. The defensive stand was highlighted in the ninth inning when Noah Unger's throw from left field cut down the potential tying run at home plate. Noah Wing tossed the final three innings of the victory; Wing did not allow a run and registered four strikeouts.
