Cornell Too Much For NWU, Halts Winning Streak


AUBURNDALE, Fla. (March 10, 2022) - The Nebraska Wesleyan baseball team fell to Cornell College, 17-9, in Auburndale, Florida. NWU's loss ends a three-game winning streak on its Florida Spring Break trip. 

Cornell had little trouble finding an offensive rhythm early in the game as they scored eight runs in the first three innings. But the Prairie Wolves answered back with two runs in the bottom of the third and fourth innings. 

Nebraska Wesleyan attempted a late comeback when it scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Derek Kolbush started the rally with a home run to right field before Evan Kling drove in Kaleb Knox with a single to center field. The rally continued when Noah Unger sent a two-run home run into left field to make it a four-run deficit. 

However, Cornell found a way to escape the jam. The Rams then added four runs in the top of the ninth inning to pull away.

John Haimowitz, Jason English, Kolbush, and Unger each tallied two hits in the game. Kolbush, Unger, and Kling all scored two runs in the victory as well. Additionally, Kolbush paced the offense with two RBIs. 

As a team, NWU combined to strike out 16 Cornell batters. Theo Hughes led the team with five strikeouts over 2 â…” innings of work out of the bullpen. Tyson Romero and Brady Harrison both rang up four batters in a combined 5 â…“ innings on the mound.
