Second Half Run Powers NWU Past Loras

LINCOLN, Neb. (February 7, 2021) - The Nebraska Wesleyan men's basketball team defeated Loras College, 76-67, at Snyder Arena.

A monstrous 45-15 run from 1:46 left in the first half to 5:44 remaining in the second half gave the Prairie Wolves everything they needed for a key conference victory. During the run, NWU shot 70.4 percent from the field including four three-pointers. Peter Lash and Landon Torneten combined for 26 of the 45 points over the 16-minute stretch.

Defensively, Nebraska Wesleyan's zone defense locked down the Duhawks during the pivotal run. Loras went 22.2 percent from the field and was just 1-of-16 from behind the three-point arc. But it was Elijah Thatch's putback slam dunk off with 7:15 left in the game that put the game away for the Prairie Wolves.

In the second half, Nebraska Wesleyan was able to knock down their shots after struggling in the first half. NWU shot 59.4 percent from the field and hit four three-pointers in the second frame after hitting zero three-pointers in the first frame. LC did most of its damage in the first half from the three-point line and free-throw line. They hit five three-pointers and 13 free-throws in the first half.

Lash, Tornenten, and Thatch carried the Prairie Wolves in the win. Lash scored 24 points and Tornenten finished with 16 points, including a 6-for-9 shooting performance. Thatch had one of his best performances of the season with a double-double. Thatch filled the stats with 11 points and 11 rebounds, the second time this season he has recorded double digit rebounds.

With the win, head coach Dale Wellman has won at least 13 games in every complete season that he has been at NWU.
