Knights Pull Away From Upset Bid


LINCOLN, Neb. (February 5, 2022) – The Nebraska Wesleyan women's basketball team fell to No. 23 Wartburg College, 69-52, in Snyder Arena.

The Prairie Wolves looked poised to pull off one of the biggest upsets in recent years and knock off its first ranked opponent under head coach Sam Dixon. NWU netted 20 points in the first quarter and shot 41.2 percent from the field and 40 percent from the three-point arc. Defensively, they held Wartburg to shoot just 14.3 percent from the three-point. The momentum propelled the Prairie Wolves to take a 22-17 lead in the second quarter, their largest lead of the game. 

Ellie Barrows powered Nebraska Wesleyan in the first quarter. Barrows came off the bench to score 10 points. Barrows went a perfect for 4-for-4 in the quarter, including knocking down two three-pointers. 

After the opening quarter, the nationally-ranked Knights turned up their defense. NWU was only able to score nine points in the second quarter and trailed 33-29 at the halftime break. The second half saw Nebraska Wesleyan continue to struggle shooting the ball, going just 25.6 percent from the field over the half. 

Anna Vandenack led the Prairie Wolves with a double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. It is the fourth double-double of the season for Vandenack. Additionally, the 14 rebounds are tied for the most in a game by a Prairie Wolf this season. Ellie Barrows finished with 13 points, including nine from behind the three-point arc. Rhett Partridge had 12 rebounds, it is the third time this season Partridge had a double-digit rebounding total.
