NWU Splits Sunday Twinbill

OMAHA, Neb. (February 27, 2022) - The Nebraska Wesleyan baseball team split its doubleheader with Westminster College at Westside High School in Omaha, Nebraska. NWU came back in the bottom of the sixth inning to win game one, 7-6, then fell in game two, 13-8.

Game One Recap
Westminster broke open the game open early with five runs in the top of the first inning. But the Prairie Wolves chipped away in the bottom half of the inning. John Haimowitz drove a double to the outfield which scored Riley Ward. Haimowitz was plated on a deep single by Jason English. After an error let Christian Harris reach base, Paul Georget drove in English with a line drive through the left side of the infield.

NWU struck again the next inning when Ward and Knox drilled back-to-back home runs to tie the game at five runs apiece. But WC took the lead a half-inning later.

In the sixth inning, Knox used a single to get on base then an error on a pickoff attempt allowed him to advance to third. A shallow fly ball that proved to be trouble from Evan Kling scored Knox and tied the game at 6-6. The Prairie Wolves took the lead two batters later when an English single hugged the right field and an error on the throw allowed Kling to score the go-ahead run. NWU finished the game with a double-play on defense to secure the win.

Game Two Recap
The Bluejays offense exploded for seven runs in the first inning then their defense quieted NWU by holding them scoreless until the fourth inning.

Kaleb Knox hit a liner to the gap to get on base in the fourth inning. John Haimowitz then cranked a double to the left-center wall and drove in Knox. However, WC was able to stop the scoring threat and escape the inning.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Knox and Haimowitz put NWU on the board again. Knox drew a walk then two batters later, Haimowitz doubled off the wall in left-center. The double scored Knox and made it an 8-2 Westminster lead. But again, the Bluejays were able to get out of the inning before the Prairie Wolves did more damage.

NWU tried to rally in the eighth inning with back-to-back doubles. Jason English ripped a double to right field to score Knox. Noah Unger then doubled to right field, which plated Evan Kling and English. However, the Bluejays forced back-to-back outs to wiggle out of the jam.

The Prairie Wolves wouldn't go down without a fight in the ninth inning. Two straight singles from Riley Ward and Knox put pressure on WC. The two would score on a deep hit double from Evan Kling. Kling scored after moving to third on a fly ball to the warning track from Haimowitz then scored on a hard line-drive from English. But the momentum was unable to continue.
