NWU Rides Out Storm, Wins Seconds Straight Game

LINCOLN, Neb. (January 24, 2022) - The Nebraska Wesleyan men's basketball team defeated Simpson College, 77-73, at Snyder Arena in Lincoln.

The Prairie Wolves had to fight off the Storm late in the game to preserve the victory, despite out scoring them 41-35 in the second half. NWU took a 66-58 lead with under five minutes in the game when Landon Torneten found Carter Glenn cutting to the basket for the score.

But Simpson was able to make to make run and get it to be a two-point game with just 10 seconds left. A free-throw from Peter Lash with seven seconds then another free-throw from Torneten a second later would ice the game away for Nebraska Wesleyan.

NWU shrugged off a slow start to open the game. SC scored the game's first five points and jumped out to an 11-2 lead. But the Prairie Wolves answered with a 10-0 run to take a 12-11 edge with 12:30 in the first half. The teams traded runs throughout the first half but Simpson had a 38-36 advantage at halftime.

Lash and Torneten combined for 39 points and tallied a 10-for-13 performance at the free-throw line. Lash finished with 20 points, the sixth time this season he has scored over 20 points. Torneten netted 19 points for the 10th time in the last 12 games. Jack Groteke came off the bench to score 10 points and record four blocked shots, which tied the most blocked shots by a Prairie Wolf this season.

As a team, NWU shot 45 percent from the game and went 75 percent from the free-throw line. Defensively, Nebraska Wesleyan was credited with six blocked shots, tying a single-game this season.
