Comeback Kids Do It Again, Extend Winning Streak

STORM LAKE, Iowa (January 26, 2022) – The Nebraska Wesleyan men's basketball team knocked off Buena Vista, 90-88 in overtime, on the road in Storm Lake, Iowa. NWU erased a four-point deficit with 15 seconds left in regulation to force overtime and win its third straight game. Additionally, it was the second time in the last three games that the Prairie Wolves completed a four-point comeback in less than a minute to force an overtime victory.

Isaiah Thomas hit Peter Lash for a turnaround jumper to bring Nebraska Wesleyan within two points, 78-76, at the 15 second mark.  The next possession Josh Rogers tied the game at 78 with a pair of free throws. Rogers was able to tie the game after Carter Glenn picked off a pass with just 10 seconds remaining and got the ball to Rogers when the foul was whistled.

In overtime, Nebraska Wesleyan had to hold off BVU down the stretch. Rogers scored the first four points of the extra period. The Beavers hit a three-pointer to make it a one-point game before Elijah Thatch pushed it back to a three-point lead with a layup. NWU was able to get the lead up to five points with 15 seconds left on a pair of free-throws from Terrence Gilder. However, Buena Vista had life with a made three-pointer followed by two missed free-throws by the Prairie Wolves with just six seconds left. A game-winning three-pointer was off the mark and a tip-in put back was after the buzzer to survive the late surge.

For the game, Nebraska Wesleyan shot a season-best 61.1 percent from the field and 66.7 percent from the three-point arc in the victory. The Prairie Wolves led for over 32 minutes and had their largest lead at six points early in the first half. But in the second half, Buena Vista was able to take a six-point lead, its biggest lead of the game, with just under three minutes to go in regulation before NWU made its comeback.

Peter Lash led a trio of Prairie Wolves in double figures for scoring. Lash finished with 27 points and went 10-for-11 from the field, including a perfect 4-for-4 on three pointers and 3-for-4 at the free-throw line. Elijah Thatch had 13 points, a new career-high. Reigning conference player of the week, Josh Rogers, had 11 points. NWU had 10 players score at least three points in the win.
