Prairie Wolves Fight Off Late Rally For First Road Win

MINNEAPOLIS (September 11, 2021) - A missed field goal with 18 seconds remaining in the game gave Nebraska Wesleyan a 20-19 road victory over Augsburg University in Minneapolis. The non-conference road win is the first by NWU since September 8, 2018.

The Prairie Wolves forced the potential game-winning field goal after stuffing the Eagles on a second and three from the nine-yard line and forcing an incompletion in the end zone on the next play. A missed extra point by AU with 11:30 left in the game proved to be the difference maker.

Augsburg needed a fourth quarter rally after Nebraska Wesleyan took the lead late in the third quarter. Carter Terry hit Isaac Dannehl for a 15-yard touchdown pass to make it a 20-13 Prairie Wolf lead with 1:44 to go in the third quarter.

The Eagles scored first in the game on a 33-yard interception return at the 3:23 mark in the first quarter. However, NWU's offense would not be rattled as it responded with a nine play, 70-yard touchdown drive on the next possession. The drive was capped off by a one-yard touchdown plunge from running back Zander Vargas just 46 seconds into the second quarter.

After the NWU defense forced a three and out, Austin Neufeld padded the lead with 23-yard field goal at 9:20 in the second quarter. Neufeld connected again on a field goal from 30 yards out with 11 seconds left in the quarter to make it a 13-7 Nebraska Wesleyan advantage at halftime.

Reigning American Rivers Conference Defensive Player of the Week, Karrell Simpson, led the defensive with seven tackles, including one tackle for a loss, one pass break-up, and one interception. Simpson now has three interceptions on the season. Dakota Prorok and Kaden Dawe each had six tackles for NWU.

Four different Prairie Wolves recorded at least five receptions in the victory, led by Kevin Tims's eight receptions for 68 yards and David O'Connell's six grabs for 72 yards. Carter Terry was 30-for-49 for 290 yards and a score. Josh Romain carried the ball 20 times for 60 yards.
