LINCOLN, Neb. (April 24, 2021) - The Nebraska Wesleyan softball team (10-15, 8-9 A-R-C) fell to Simpson College (11-14, 8-9 A-R-C), in a doubleheader on Saturday at University Place in Lincoln. The Storm won game one, 7-1, then won game two, 12-3.Â
Hanna Roth opened game one with a double for NWU before Emma Alfieri drove her in with an RBI single for a 1-0 lead. The Prairie Wolves maintained the lead by only allowing one base runner to reach base in the second inning then retiring the Storm in order in both the third and fourth innings. However, Simpson broke through with five runs in the fifth and added two more runs in the sixth to win game one.
Game two started with Roth again getting aboard with a leadoff hit before scoring on an RBI single, this time from Valerie Gerlach. But the Storm responded with a run in the second inning and six runs in the third inning. Nebraska Wesleyan chipped away at the deficit with two runs in the third inning. Ashlee Mayorga drove Roth and Alfieri with a two-out single. But the Prairie Wolves were unable to rally a comeback as SC added runs in the fourth and sixth innings for the victory.
Saturday's doubleheader also marked NWU's celebration of three senior softball student-athletes. Prior to game one's first pitch Savanna Lakin, Rachel Mundt, and Alycin Braun were all recognized as they compete in their final season as Prairie Wolves.
