Wartburg Escapes NWU Softball With A Pair Of One-Run Wins

WAVERLY, Iowa. (April 2, 2021) - The Nebraska Wesleyan softball team (6-10, 4-4 A-R-C) dropped a pair of one-run games to No. 16 Wartburg (15-3, 6-2 A-R-C) on Friday afternoon. The Prairie Wolves fell in game one, 5-4, and came up short in game two, 6-5.

Game One Recap
Facing a three-run deficit in the top of the fifth inning, NWU tied the game with three runs in the frame. Taylor Styskal drilled a solo home run to left field to start the rally. The Prairie Wolves added two more runs off of a two-run double from Emma Alfieri. Alfieri's hit plated Mollie Grant and Hanna Roth. In the seventh, Nebraska Wesleyan took the lead with an Alfieri single up the middle to drive in Roth. Wartburg answered with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the game.

Game Two Recap
Wartburg scored two early runs in the first inning then added three runs in the third and another in the fourth before NWU was able to get on the board. A bases loaded walk allowed the Prairie Wolves to score Taylor Styskal for their first of three runs in the fifth inning. After the walk, a wild pitch scored Valerie Gerlach and moved Bailey Green and Alycin Braun up to second and third bases respectively. Hanna Roth singled two batters later to plate Green and cut the deficit to three runs.

An inning later, Green made it a one-run game with two outs as she went deep to center field for her first home run of the season. However, Nebraska Wesleyan's momentum was halted and the Knights held on to win.
